There are a lot of web design software options to choose from including free software, tools that require subscription or content management systems (CMS). There are online and offline web builders, coding and image editors as well as rapid prototyping tools. The vast amount of software and tools out there can feel overwhelming, especially for those beginning their web design journey, but finding the software to suit your design needs is key.
Some web designers and developers use Adobe software products such as Dreamweaver or Muse but today multi-functional website design platforms are proving popular with both beginners and experienced web designers.
Our team of designers and developers at Gorilla Marketing are committed to building professional and highly-customisable websites for your business. Every project we work on is designed to be loved by both you, your customers and search engines. To create our responsive website designs we use a free content management system (CMS) called WordPress.
It is important to note there are two versions of WordPress. We don’t use WordPress.com which although effective is a simpler and more restrictive website creation tool. We use Wordpress.org which allows you to use your own hosting provider, install external plugins and more.
Which software is the best for web designing can be a difficult question to answer as there are strength and limitations to the many software options, tools, and platforms. We have compared three web designing platforms, Wix, WordPress, and Squarepusher, to establish which one is the best for versatility, flexibility, e-commerce, blogging, and SEO.
Versatile and Trusted
One of the primary reasons we prefer WordPress to other website platforms, such as Wix or Squarespace, is because of the impressive versatility that it offers as a CMS. It allows designers full control to create stunning websites ranging from blog sites to business, and e-commerce with the opportunity to be completely flexible. A lot of big brands, such as TechCrunch and The New Yorker, agree with us and also use WordPress to build their sites. In fact, in 2018 around 30% of the total number of websites on the internet were built using WordPress software. However, there are some Pros to other website designers such as Wix and Squarespace.
Themes and Flexibility
Wix offers smart, stylish, and easy to use themes to rival WordPress. They are flexible to a degree but it isn’t possible to create more complex websites in Wix or Squarespace such as directories or social media pages. The drag and drop option when building a site of is a great feature though and perhaps makes Wix the best option for beginners. Squarespace has a similar feel and is also known for high-quality theme designs and impressive features popular with creatives. It takes a little more time to build a site than Wix but is more customisable. WordPress software allows you to create almost any type of website but a technical knowledge of coding and programming experience is more necessary. At Gorilla Marketing we specialise in this type of design and development and apply all of our talent and WordPress expertise into ensuring your vision for your business website comes to life.
For e-commerce, Wix websites can design and add a dedicated online store section but it is arguably more suited to small businesses due to limits on tax and shipping options. Using third-party plugins such as WooCommerce on WordPress can avoid these issues as you have more options and are able to fully customise your online store. The number of Squarespace plugins is steadily growing but are not as easy to install as WordPress plugins. Squarespace does offer a built-in e-commerce system but it can prove limiting in terms of payment gateways, it currently only allows Stripe and PayPal, and that it does not allow you to export digital products. Gorilla Marketing uses customisable WordPress plugins to ensure your business product is accessible and that you aren’t missing out on customers due to limitations on the features of your website.
As a blogging platform, Wix offers some good options allowing you to create categories, use tags, feature related posts and schedule your posts. However, the layout for blogging is not as simple and effective as the website design editor, which allows you to drag and drop, this can lead to some restrictions. Wix software may be easier to use in some ways than a WordPress blog but it just doesn’t offer the more advanced options that your business may require. In terms of blogging and content management, Squarespace will not auto-save your posts or store past versions of posts which can be limiting. The Gorilla Marketing team are able to seamlessly add a powerful blog to your website and manually customise it to your needs through our knowledge of HTML.
At Gorilla Marketing, we are experts in Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) and with the right plugins, we can get the most out of your business website in terms of ranking. Yoast SEO is a good example of a WordPress plugin that will allow you full SEO capabilities. WordPress is also recommended for its integration with Google developed tools such as Google Analytics and Google Search Console via plugins. In comparison, Wix is pretty SEO-friendly too but much harder to rank, especially with the free plan that doesn’t allow a custom domain. If you use a lot of images necessary to your business it can cause some SEO problems as Wix will automatically give them a cryptic name. Squarespace is perhaps the weaker option here, as it will not allow you to optimise blog posts or product pages.
Which website design software is right for you?
As previously mentioned, the range and diversity of the web design software available make it difficult to state which one is the best. However, there is plenty of information out there to help you decide which one is right for you. You know longer need to be an expert on coding to create a website and there are now tools you can use to simplify the process including the website builders we’ve discussed; Wix, WordPress, and Squarespace. Creating great customisable websites requires skill and an understanding of digital web design regardless of the software of CMS you use.
